The Magnetic Navigational Lab makes Providence one of the first providers in
the United States for electrophysiology and in the world for interventional
cardiology. This innovative diagnostic procedure represents the world's new
standard of care in cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment. Twin
computer-controlled magnets, weighing more than two tons each, are moved
into position in order to create a magnetic field within the lab. Once in
place, cardiologists use the system's computerized joystick device to reach
areas in the heart that are simply impossible to reach with conventional
procedures. Reaching these areas in the cath lab setting will reduce the
number of patients having to undergo risky, painful open-heart surgery. This
state-of-the-art equipment currently has two uses: coronary intervention
applications which assist with structural problems of the heart such as blocked
arteries and electrophysiology applications which precisely identify and
isolate problems with the heart's rhythms.
