Heart attack is the number one killer of American women today. Heart disease actually kills more women than the next 16 causes of death combined.
In a 2003 medical statement, the American Heart Association cited that the absolute number of deaths among women aged 50+ years from cardiovascular disease is increasing to epidemic proportion. More than one in five females have some form of cardiovascular disease.
According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, heart disease and stroke took nearly double the number of female lives than cancer in 1999. In the same report, 39.2 percent of women died from diseases of the heart or stroke compared to 21.7 percent of females who died from cancer.
